Players, teams start rush to settle in arbitration (AP)

NEW YORK ? Players and teams started rushing to settle arbitration cases Monday, a day before the sides were to swap proposed salaries.

Thirteen players agreed to contracts, leaving 124 set to exchange figures after 142 filed for arbitration last week. About 80-100 more were expected to reach agreements before the sides submit proposals Tuesday afternoon for one-year contracts that are not guaranteed.

San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum was expected to set records for the highest salaries asked for and received in arbitration. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner made $13.1 million last season, completing a two-year deal worth $23.2 million.

The highest figure ever requested was $22 million by Houston pitcher Roger Clemens in 2005 after he became a free agent and accepted arbitration. Among players with less than six years of major league service, the high of $18.5 million has been held by Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter since 2001.

San Francisco figures to top the $14.25 million the Yankees submitted for Jeter.

Others set to swap include NL Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw and Los Angeles Dodgers teammate Andre Ethier, Philadelphia pitcher Cole Hamels and teammate Hunter Pence, World Series star Mike Napoli of Texas and Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza.

Washington pitcher Gio Gonzalez, acquired from Oakland last month, has the big deal thus far, a $42 million, five-year contract that includes both a club option and a vesting player option. It could be worth $65.5 million over seven seasons.

Settlements are happening more slowly than in recent years: The 142 players who filed were the most since 150 in 1992.

About a half-dozen more players will become eligible for arbitration next year, when eligibility increases slightly for players with two to three years of major league service, from the top 17 percent by service time to the top 22 percent. They join unsigned players with at least three but less than six years of service.

Among one-year contracts announced Monday were deals for San Francisco outfielder Angel Pagan ($4.85 million), Pittsburgh All-Star closer Joel Hanrahan ($4.1 million) and right-hander Charlie Morton ($2,445,000), Detroit right-hander Rick Porcello ($3.1 million) and left-hander Phil Coke ($1.1 million), Kansas City second baseman Chris Getz ($937,500) and catcher Brayan Pena ($835,000), New York Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes ($3.2 million), Los Angeles Angels third baseman Alberto Callaspo ($3.15 million), Milwaukee outfielder Nyjer Morgan ($2.35 million), Tampa Bay reliever J.P. Howell ($1.35 million), Boston pitcher Franklin Morales ($850,000) and Washington catcher Jesus Flores ($815,000).

Baltimore announced deals for two players who agreed to them before filing: right-hander Darren O'Day ($1.35 million) and left-hander Dana Eveland ($750,000).

Among free agents, outfielder Ryan Ludwick and the Cincinnati Reds agreed to a $2.5 million, one-year contract, a person with knowledge of the agreement said, speaking on condition of anonymity because it was subject to a physical. Cincinnati announced a minor league deal with catcher Dioner Navarro.

Oft-injured reliever Joel Zumaya and Minnesota agreed to an $850,000, one-year contract, a person with knowledge of that deal said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team had yet to announce it.

Philadelphia and pitcher Joel Pineiro agreed to a minor league contract, a person familiar with that deal said, also on condition of anonymity because it had not been announced.

Boston agreed to minor league contracts with pitchers Aaron Cook and Justin Germano that were announced, and a deal with Vicente Padilla that was not announced.

In a trade, Colorado acquired right-hander Guillermo Moscoso and left-hander Josh Outman from Oakland for outfielder Seth Smith, who struck out against Boston's Jonathan Papelbon for the final out of the 2007 World Series.

European court: Cleric can't be deported from UK (AP)

LONDON ? An extremist cleric described as one of Europe's leading al-Qaida operatives should not be deported to face terrorism charges in Jordan because of the risk evidence obtained through torture would be used against him, Europe's highest court ruled Tuesday.

After a six-year legal battle, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that deporting Abu Qatada from Britain ? where he is in prison ? would "give rise to a flagrant denial of justice."

Abu Qatada ? whose real name is Omar Mahmoud Mohammed Othman ? is an extremist Muslim preacher from Jordan who has been described in both Spanish and British courts as a leading al-Qaida figure in Europe.

A Palestinian-Jordanian citizen, Abu Qatada arrived in Britain in 1993 and was detained in 2002 under anti-terrorism laws which at the time allowed suspected terrorists to be held in jail without charge.

Though Abu Qatada was released in 2005, when the unpopular law was overturned, he was kept under surveillance and arrested again within months, to be held pending his deportation to face terrorism charges in Jordan.

He was convicted in his absence in Jordan of terrorist offenses related to two alleged bomb plots in 1999 and 2000, and would face a retrial if deported there from Britain.

Although Abu Qatada has never faced criminal charges in Britain, authorities in the U.K. have accused him of advising militants and raising money for terrorist attacks. He "is a leading spiritual adviser with extensive links to, and influence over, extreme Islamists in the U.K. and overseas," prosecutors told a British court in 2007.

Britain's Home Secretary Theresa May said she was disappointed by the ruling and the government would consider appealing the European court's decision. It has a three-month window in which to make any appeal, the court said.

"This is not the end of the road," May said. She confirmed Abu Qatada would remain held in British prison custody while a decision is made.

May has not specified what Britain would do if it loses any appeal, though it is likely Abu Qatada would be freed from prison and monitored under a surveillance program which requires those suspected of involvement in terrorism, but not charged with any crime, to abide by a curfew and wear an electronic anklet.

Abu Qatada's lawyer, Gareth Peirce, said the European court had sent a clear message that it would be wrong to prosecute a suspect on "evidence emanating from torture."

Peirce said she hoped Britain would not appeal and that the U.K. had been wrong to press to have her client deported since 2005.

"The court's judgment of today is long, thoughtful and complex, and sets out important guidelines for Europe's member states on a number of difficult issues," she said. "It would indeed be disappointing if the implications of this judgment were not carefully and adequately digested and the United Kingdom were to continue a challenge which flies so directly in the face of internationally accepted standards."

Britain's Special Immigration Appeals Commission has previously been told Abu Qatada also was suspected of links to a bomb plot in Strasbourg, France, and to the raising of funds for terrorism in Chechnya.

In their ruling, the European judges based in Strasbourg said they did not accept Abu Qatada's claims that he would face ill treatment or torture at the hands of Jordanian authorities if sent there for trial, citing recent agreements between Jordan and the U.K.

But the judges warned that evidence in his case had been obtained by torturing his co-accused.

"The court found that torture was widespread in Jordan, as was the use of torture evidence by the Jordanian courts," the ruling said. "In relation to each of the two terrorist conspiracies ... the evidence of his involvement had been obtained by torturing one of his co-defendants."

Judges said evidence obtained through torture is illegal under international law and is also unreliable. The ruling said "there was a high probability that the incriminating evidence would be admitted ... and that it would be of considerable, perhaps decisive, importance."

Britain's highest court had ruled in 2009 that Abu Qatada should be deported to Jordan, despite fears over his potential mistreatment.

Human rights group Liberty urged the British government to make efforts to have Abu Qatada prosecuted in Britain.

"The court found that torture and evidence obtained that way is widespread" in Jordan, Shami Chakrabarti, the group's director, said in a statement. "So it is clear that, if Abu Qatada is to be tried for terrorism, this should happen in a British court without further delay."

British Prime Minister David Cameron will call for reform of the European court in a long-planned speech next week at the Strasbourg-based Council of Europe. He has frequently complained over the human rights court's rulings and said it had made him "physically ill" when Britain was ordered in 2010 to overturn a centuries-old law and allow prisoners to vote in national elections.

"We have been talking for some time about reform for the European Court of Human Rights," Cameron's spokesman Steve Field said following the Abu Qatada ruling. Field said the court's backlog of about 160,000 cases proved "something isn't working quite as it should be."

Cameron believes the court must focus on the most important cases "rather than essentially being a court of appeal for national judgments," the spokesman said.

Jolie and Almodovar discuss future collaboration (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Don't be stunned to see a future collaboration between superstar American actress ? and now director ? Angelina Jolie and revered Spanish director Pedro Almodovar.

The two were among attendees at the annual Golden Globes foreign-language seminar on Saturday at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, where directors nominated in the category discussed this year's competition.

The entries include Jolie's "In the Land of Blood and Honey," about family strife and abuse of women in Bosnia, and Almodovar's psycho-thriller "The Skin I Live In."

Unlike other celebrities at the event, Jolie surprised reporters by showing up early, relaxed and gracious as she posed for photographers and talked about what inspired her to move behind the camera for "Blood and Honey."

At one point, Jolie half-joked to a Spanish reporter that she was angry with Almodovar because he'd yet to hire her for a role. When Almodovar was given that news by an Associated Press reporter ? within earshot of Jolie ? the actress jumped into the fray.

"I am right here," Jolie noted. "Yes, because you have never given me a job."

"Oh my God," said a flustered Almodovar. "No, no don't worry, you are joining now. Absolutely."

"So one day," Jolie responded, "when all these cameras are gone, we find a film together."

Anderson scores career-best 30, Magic beat Knicks (AP)

NEW YORK ? Ryan Anderson scored a career-high 30 points, extending his NBA lead with seven 3-pointers, and the Orlando Magic beat the New York Knicks 102-93 on Monday to complete a perfect four-game road trip.

Taking advantage of extra space as the Knicks focused on Dwight Howard, Anderson went 7 of 13 behind the arc and is now 40 of 93 for the season.

JJ Redick added 21 points for the Magic, who won three games on the West Coast before finishing in New York and will play at home the next two nights to wrap up a stretch of three games in three nights.

Howard, who tied a career high with 45 points and set an NBA record by taking 39 free throws in Orlando's 117-109 win at Golden State on Thursday, was in foul trouble and finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. The Knicks swarmed him inside, with Tyson Chandler behind him and often bringing another big player to double him.

So the Magic turned to their perimeter game, going 17 of 35 (49 percent) from 3-point range. Anderson and Hedo Turkoglu each made two in the fourth quarter, when the Magic took control after trailing most of the game.

Carmelo Anthony had 33 points and eight rebounds in his return from a one-game absence with a sprained right ankle, but shot just 9 of 27. Toney Douglas and Iman Shumpert each scored 12 and Amare Stoudemire finished with 10, eight in the fourth quarter after also battling foul trouble.

The Knicks have lost three in a row. They opened a stretch of four games in a six-game span with another poor shooting night, which has plagued them this season.

The Knicks scored the first six points and led 23-17 after the first quarter, a lead they would maintain for most of the first three quarters. They were ahead 51-45 at halftime and still up six with 2 1/2 minutes left in the third period before the Magic scored the final four points to cut it to 75-73.

New York led for the final time at 85-83 on Stoudemire's dunk with 7:42 remaining. Jameer Nelson made a free throw before Turkoglu and Anderson nailed consecutive 3-pointers for a 90-85 advantage. The Knicks got within three with about 3 1/2 minutes left, but Redick scored four straight points to put it away.

Orlando has won 14 of last 17 meetings.

Notes: The Knicks fell to 18-8 on Martin Luther King Day. ... Though unclear exactly what the process would be, Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said Baron Davis could take part in full practices soon, perhaps next week. The point guard hasn't played since the Knicks signed him because of a herniated disc in his back. ... Jason Richardson sat out with a bone bruise of his left knee.
