Cities worldwide are on track to expand by nearly 580,000 square miles ? more than twice the size of Texas ? in less than 20 years, according to experts at a major international science conference.

Yale University professor Karen Seto said the North American suburb had ?gone global, and car-dependent urban developments are more and more the norm.?

The world?s population is expected to grow from the current 7 billion to about 9 billion by 2050, according to the United Nations.

Experts meeting at the Planet Under Pressure 2012 conference in London said in a statement released by the organizers Tuesday that unless changes were made, ?humanity?s urban footprint? would increase in size by 1.5 million square kilometers (nearly 580,000 square miles) by 2030.

This is significantly more than twice the size of Texas or, according to a "back-of-the-envelope calculation" by Seto,?more than 43,000 football fields every day for the next 18 years.

?The way cities have grown since World War II is neither socially or environmentally sustainable and the environmental cost of ongoing urban sprawl is too great to continue,? Seto said in the statement.

?People everywhere, however, have increasingly embraced Western styles of architecture and urbanization, which are resource-intense and often not adapted to local climates,? she added. ?The North American suburb has gone global, and car-dependent urban developments are more and more the norm.?

Eco-friendly skyscrapers?
Seto was one of the authors of a report in the journal PLoS One about global urban sprawl, along with Michail Fragkias of Arizona State University,?who is?one of some 2,800 participants at the London conference.

The Planet Under Pressure conference is designed to give an idea of the health of the globe ahead of the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in June.

Fragkias told msnbc.com that "the answer [to urban sprawl] is denser cities."

"The main message is we are not going to get away with cities like Phoenix or cities like Los Angeles," he said. "These are the typical cities of the single-family house, with a huge lot and huge highways that connect various areas of the cities because there is no way you can have an efficient or cheap enough mass transit system to support them."

Instead, densely populated areas such as Singapore or Manhattan --?but not New York City's?surrounding urban sprawl --?provided possible models for the future. "If cities can develop in height rather than in width that would be much more preferable and environmentally not as harmful," Fragkias said.

But Seto told msnbc.com that density was only part of the answer, saying someone who lives close to where they work in Phoenix could have a low environmental impact, compared to someone living in a densely packed city who commutes through congested streets in a car.

And she said that increasing the?urban?population?was "absolutely" the way to deal with the rising number of people in the world.

"For a long time, environmental activists said 'cities are bad.' The rationale was cities take up space and that could be better used for gorillas and butterflies and all those other things," Seto told msnbc.com.

But she said the global population was increasing and "we certainly don't want them strolling about the entire countryside. We want them to save land for nature by living closely [together]."

The conference statement said that?creating more environmentally friendly cities included better infrastructure planning; ?reversing the trend to ever larger homes;" and ending subsidies that favor cars over public transport.

Beijing's 'hubs' haven't curbed population pressures

Inner city schools should also be improved and other urban issues such as income inequality and crime rates addressed, the statement said.

"Cities are being built so quickly, we have to rethink how we do things ... Rome wasn't built in a day, but Chinese cities are," Seto quipped, saying most urban growth was taking place in Asia.

UNICEF: Millions of kids live in urban squalor

On Tuesday, organizers of the conference also highlighted a website called Welcome to the Anthropocene, referring to a term adopted by scientists and environmentalists to describe what they say is a new epoch, one uniquely influenced by human actions.

The idea the world had entered the Anthropocene was first put forward in 2000?by Dutch Nobel laureate Professor Paul Crutzen and U.S. academic Professor Eugene F. Stoermer.

"This century is special in the Earth's history. It is the first when one species -- ours -- has the planet's future in its hands," Martin Rees of the Royal Society, Britain's academy of sciences, said at the conference Monday according to the AFP news agency. "We've invented a new geological era: the Anthropocene.?

Franklin came of age singing in church and brought her gospel stylings to the mainstream when she hit it big in the 1960s. She was never as sexy as many of the female singers of her era, nor was she as smooth as the male ones. But what she brought to the table usually outclassed them all: a voice so rich and powerful it virtually defined American soul music.

It?s a voice that influenced generations of singers. With no Aretha, there?s no Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey or Christina Aguilera. For that matter, it?s hard to imagine a lot of male singers without her, such as Luther Vandross or George Michael (with whom she sang a chart-topping duet in 1987).

How to pay tribute to such a soul legend? Make it a point to see her live.

Franklin has had some recent health scares, and health issues purportedly were the reason she backed out of singing at Houston?s funeral. Yet she still soldiers on with her voice in seemingly excellent shape. In light of the deaths of so many of her contemporaries, Franklin is genuinely a survivor, having endured health problems, an abusive husband and financial troubles.

In the next few months, she?s scheduled to play gigs in Ohio, Kentucky and New York. Critics might poke fun at what Franklin wears (see the inauguration clip) or her recent on-and-off marriage plans, but when she starts to sing, you?d be hard pressed to find anyone being critical.

Sorry, Romney, it's no longer an Etch A Sketch world

Throughout his political career, Mitt Romney has relied on the ability to ignore past platforms and start fresh from campaign to campaign. But in the video age, the past is harder to erase.

Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom couldn?t have said it better ? or worse. When asked by CNN Wednesday morning whether Mitt was being pushed so far to the right by Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich that he?d be handicapped in the general election, Fehrnstrom said ?you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It?s almost like an Etch-A-Sketch. You kind of shake it up and restart all over again.?

An Etch-A-Sketch, for those of you under twenty, is a thick flat gray screen that comes in a plastic frame with two knobs on the front in the lower corners ? one left, one right. Twisting the knobs changes the aluminum powder on the back of the screen, creating completely new images. If you twist the left knob, you alter the powder horizontially; twist the right nob, and you alter it vertically.

Remind you of anyone?

When Mitt ran for governor of Massachusetts he twisted the left knob, moving horizontally to the left. (I know first hand because I ran in the Democratic primary that year.) He became a social liberal, tolerant of abortion and willing to entertain the idea that gays and lesbians should be able to form civil unions. He was also an economic moderate interested in seeking ways to expand health-care coverage.

But ever since Mitt left the governor?s office, he?s been twisting the right nob, moving downward into the muck of regressive Republicanism in pursuit of the Republican nomination.

Etch-A-Sketch was introduced in 1959 near the peak of the baby boom. (It was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1998, and in 2003 the Toy Industry Association named it one of the hundred most memorable toys of the twentieth century.)

But Etch-A-Sketch has been replaced by digital toys that have the capacity to play and replay videos. These new video toys aren?t just for kids. Almost every voting adult has one, or has easy access to one.

Get it??It?won?t be nearly as easy for Mitt to ?shake it up and start all over again? for the general election of 2012, should he get the nomination. Try as he might, Romney won?t be able to twist the knobs and create a brand new picture.

There will be too many videos of him during the primary saying things that were designed to appeal to increasingly far-right, far-out GOP primary voters ? but will strike most Americans as bizarre if not despicable.

America has always been the kind of place where people can reinvent themselves, escaping from their pasts by turning the knobs on their own virtual Etch-A-Sketch identities. But the ubiquity of video technology has made this much, much harder to do. Videos have a way of reminding everyone who you are ? and were.

If he makes it to the general election, Mitt won?t be able to hide his primary self.

The Stational Churches of Rome

You may have noticed in liturgical calendars or in hand missals that every day in Lent and the Octave of Easter is assigned a ?station?, a church in Rome. For example, the church assigned to the Third Sunday of Lent is St. Lawrence Outside the Walls.

In the first centuries of the Church, the Bishop?s liturgy was considered the most significant in the diocese. The Bshop made his way to each of the stational churches on the set days. After evolving over preceding centuries, a standardized list of Rome?s stational churches was published by Pope St. Gregory the Great in the sixth century. In the ninth century, Pope Leo III expanded the list to comprise 94 churches in all, spread over 92 days, though the ones designated for Lent and Easter remain the best-known.

Today, the stational churches present an opportunity for a Lenten pilgrimage. On its designated day, each stational church offers a procession, praying of the Litany of the Saints, and veneration of relics. While we are not aware of a published listing of the times of these services, the Pontifical North American College [Seminary] in Rome offers Mass in English at each of the stational churches each morning; a schedule is published at: http://www.pnac.org/station-churches/the-roman-station-liturgy/

The Church enriches pilgrimages to the stational churches as follows:

?...a plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who assist in the sacred functions held in any stational church on its designated day; if they merely visit the church devoutly, the indulgence will be partial.? [Excerpt from the 2006 Manual of Indulgences]

For people in our era, the stational churches remind us of how many significant and truly historic churches there are in the Eternal City. The depth and commitment of our ancestors? faith and the Communion of the Saints are made vivid when one participates in ancient devotions and customs in these edifices.

St. Stephen Church Reinstalls Communion Rail

In an update to our report on local Tridentine Masses from our February 19 column, we are pleased to report that St. Stephen Parish in New Boston, Michigan, near Detroit Metro Airport, continues to hold Extraordinary Form Masses several times per month. The designation of which Holy Masses are Tridentine is not posted on their web site or in their parish bulletin, so one must call the parish to learn the schedule.

In a parallel and encouraging development, St. Stephen has installed a new Communion Rail in its historic church. The original Communion Rail had been removed decades ago. This is the second local parish which has undertaken such an effort: A few years ago, Ann Arbor?s Old St. Patrick Church installed a Communion Rail in preparation for the introduction of Extraordinary Form Masses at the parish.

This is a growing trend. It goes without saying that churches being built primarily for the Tridentine Mass, such as those administered by the Fraternity of St. Peter, incorporate Communion Rails. More significantly, some new churches built primarily for the Ordinary Form of Holy Mass are also including Altar Rails. Examples include the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin; Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California; and the Fathers of Mercy Chapel of Divine Mercy in Auburn, Kentucky. The first two of these regularly host the Extraordinary Form.

Summ?rum Pont?ficum permits any priest and church to hold Mass in the Extraordinary Form. Because of this new legislation, the pastorally sensitive approach when planning new churches or renovations is to include a Communion Rail, a component central to the rubrics of the Extraordinary Form. Further, Pope Benedict XVI?s example of distributing Holy Communion only while kneeling is a reminder of the merits of that approach in the Ordinary Form. The rail has a practical purpose, to facilitate the devotional kneeling posture, as well as a theological purpose, to demarcate the sanctuary where sacred actions take place from the more profane rest of the church. Another element of our Catholic tradition is on the road to restoration.

A reminder that Mass on Monday, March 19 will be at the special time and place of 6:00 PM at St. Joseph Church for the Feast of St. Joseph, rather than at St. Josaphat.
