Who might fill the NFL coaching openings

When NFL coaching jobs open, the names Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy immediately surface as potential candidates.

Much more likely than any of those Super Bowl winners returning to the sideline for 2013 would be the hirings of more obscure assistant coaches such as Mike Zimmer, Mike McCoy and Gus Bradley.

And Jon Gruden's brother, Jay.

Sure, some of the best-known coaches, including Andy Reid and Lovie Smith, who lost their jobs Monday, will be in the mix. So might college coaches Chip Kelly of Oregon and Bill O'Brien of Penn State.

Maybe even Nick Saban, although leaving Alabama for the NFL is a long shot.

Sugar Bowl 2013: For game against Florida, Louisville players have no curfew

Louisville head coach Charlie Strong doesn't live up to his name when it comes to bowl-week discipline. It has been reported that the Cardinal players will not have a curfew during their stay in New Orleans for the 2013 Sugar Bowl. Opponent Florida certainly will, according to head coach Will Muschamp, though only the players know what the curfew is. Bourbon Street may run Cardinal red this New Year's season.

Meanwhile, Florida safety Matt Elam has declared for the NFL Draft. The junior announced his decision today, just shy of the deadline for underclassmen to declare for April's draft. CBS' draft scouts both have Elam as a first-round pick.

Gator Nation's Matt DiRocco has a breakdown of the Gators third-down defense, which is one of the best in the country. Florida is allowing just a 16% conversion rate on third downs of seven or more yards and only once in 22 tries has the opposition converted a third down of 13 yards or longer. DiRocco cites the secondary play and the Gators' ability to create a pass rush with just four down linemen.

In his first season as a starter, sophomore quarterback Jeff Driskel was tasked to simply manage an effective running game and rely on the Gators' defense, third in the country in points allowed. But as Matt DiRocco points out, Driskel can use the Sugar Bowl as a springboard for next season. The Oviedo, Florida, native can use the national stage to make a name for himself and build confidence going into his junior season.

It may also help that Driskel will be facing a defense that went to bed at a questionable hour.

Body of Georgian soldier found in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The body of a Georgian soldier who is believed to be the first member of the international coalition in Afghanistan to have gone missing in more than three years was found in the country's south, NATO said Sunday. The coalition said he had been captured, without providing further details.

A statement said Afghan police found the body and turned it over to NATO forces Saturday. He went missing Dec. 18 in the restive province of Helmand.

The solider from the NATO-led coalition is believed to be the first to have gone missing since a U.S. Army sergeant was captured by the Taliban in June 2009. The dead soldier was among the 1,500 troops from the former Soviet republic of Georgia serving in Afghanistan. NATO says an investigation is under way into his capture and death.

An Afghan district official said a villager found the body about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the soldier's base in Helmand's Musaqala district and informed local police. The official requested anonymity since he was not authorized to talk with the press.

Georgia's Defense Ministry earlier described the missing man as an officer and said an intense search and rescue operation had been mounted in Helmand and Nimroz provinces.

The last known coalition soldier to go missing was U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, 26, who was taken prisoner by militants in Paktika province in southeastern Afghanistan. Attempts have been made by the U.S. to secure his release but have so far failed.

Nineteen Georgian soldiers have been killed since the country joined international military operations in Afghanistan in August 2009. Georgia is not a member of NATO but has significant presence in the country relative to its population of 4.5 million.

There are currently more than 100,000 coalition troops in the country, including some 66,000 from the United States. Only a residual force is slated to remain past 2014.

Succeed At Losing Weight With These Great Tips! | reflexvision.net

It is important to eat at the same time each day. This consistency will help your body get used to when the next food is coming, so you will be less apt to desire snacks between the meals. If you need to snack, follow a schedule too. Having a schedule will help reduce overeating and will improve organization.

TIP! Monitor your calorie intake. You can do this in a blank spiral notebook that will not cost much money to buy.

With such a wide variety of advice on losing weight out there, it is easy to get confused or overwhelmed. Start slowly and take things gradually. The following are some easy weight loss tips that will help you get started without leaving you feeling overwhelmed.

Try working out with a buddy so that they can help you remain on the right track. Exercise together, share your struggles and successes together, and celebrate together when you reach a milestone. If you are accountable to your partner, it will be more difficult to skip a workout or eat a slice of cake.

TIP! Celebrate the small things; if you reach a smaller milestone, enjoy that moment. You can buy a small gift or do something special that you have fun doing but don?t regularly get to do.

Clench your back and stomach muscles as you walk, and make an effort to maintain it as long as you can. After a period of doing this, stop and start all over again. This will help your posture and improve your overall tone ? even your gluteus maximus.

When you are losing weight, pay close attention to your portion sizes. A good guideline for meat portions is three ounces or about what would fit in the palm of one hand. Studies have demonstrated that those who pay close attention to their portions tend to shed the most pounds overall.

Mufa Foods

Unused calories do not just go away, they are stored as fat. You shouldn?t eat if you are ready to sleep or are being lazy. Eat when you will be exercising or moving around to help your body burn off the calories. This is a way you can ensure your calories will be used up.

TIP! Cleaning your house daily is a good way to help keep those pounds off. Cleaning your house by using a fast paced technique with no breaks in between different chores can be a great work out.

To boost the chances of successful and healthy weight loss, learn which foods belong to the MUFA group. The acronym MUFA means ?monounsaturated fatty acids?. These include a variety of nuts, butters, and oils. MUFA foods will let you lose weight and they also have a lot more health benefits associated with them. Use MUFA foods appropriately in your diet.

Doing cardiovascular activities is the best way to lose weight in a short amount of time. Weight training is important for building muscle tone and shapely muscles, but cardio exercise is responsible for fat burning and weight loss. If you are looking to lose weight, you should focus on getting your heart pumping instead of toning muscle.

TIP! You can find ads from grocery stores online in order to save money while grocery shopping. By doing this you can get great prices possible on things like meat, vegetables and fruit.

Eating leftovers is wonderful for losing weight. When you make a healthy supper, make a bit extra to have for the next day?s lunch. You can create many different meals by making sandwiches with your leftovers. Leftovers will let you make healthy lunches without extra fuss.

Refrain from wearing loose fitting clothing during the course of the day. Loose clothing may seem like the most comfortable way to go, but it can also allow you to ignore a weight problem. Wearing clothes that fits will help keep you aware of the weight you?re trying to lose.

TIP! Drinking water can help you achieve your weight loss goals. When you drink cold water, it begins to cool your body.

Controlling the amount of food you eat is more important than watching the number of calories in every meal. Now a days people become obsessed with the chemistry of ingredients in food. There does not seem to be a lot of discussion on portion sizes. It so simple to make your diet better, just eat a little less.

Always consult a nutritionist when thinking about embarking on your own weight loss diet. Everyone has a different body type, so something that worked for one person might not work for the other. Help is one of the best ways to support your weight loss program.

Drink water before every meal. Don?t let yourself get too hungry as this can cause you to overeat too.

Try eating filling, but low calorie, foods. Eating something like soup or salad before the main course will have you ingesting fewer calories. Be sure to drink unsweetened beverages such as coffee, iced tea or water before and during meals to feel more satisfied.

TIP! Aim to become friends with healthy and fit people. They can serve as the model body for you to aspire to look like.

Partnering with another person is one of the most effective ways to stick with your fitness program. Knowing another person who has goals similar to yours, participates in the same workouts and follows a similar diet can really keep you dedicated. You can support each other, motivate each other, and help each other through rough patches.

There are some really good reasons why you need plenty of protein in your daily diet. The first reason is because protein does not add excess pounds like carbohydrates do, and the second more important reason is that it is required to build muscles. Having a larger muscle mass causes you to burn fat faster.

Weight Loss

A great tip that could help you in losing weight is to take multivitamins. When you diet, there are many foods that are rich in vitamins that you eliminate. Taking a multivitamin ensures you get all the essential vitamins you need to stay healthy.

TIP! Try to keep the conversation going when eating at a restaurant. The more you talk, the less you?ll eat.

Try gradual and slow weight loss if your goal is to make it permanent. You may feel good seeing fast weight loss, but dropping pounds fast is typically due to water weight and this weight loss is not going to stick. Avoid the temptation to fall for the scams all over the market and focus on losing weight slowly and safely.

Green tea is a great alternative to soda, that will help promote your weight loss. You may enjoy drinking it with a touch of honey or another organic sweetening agent. Healthy black tea is another option. There are antioxidants in it that can help cleanse your system and boost your immunity.

TIP! To maintain good health, eat smaller meal portions. Studies have proven that a diet of smaller meals throughout the day will help to keep you healthy, and maintain your desired body weight.

Avoid all soda. It may be sweet, but it isn?t good for you or your weight. Chose a bottle of water instead as a simple way to help increase your weight loss. If you still feel the need to have a sweet beverage, try fresh-squeezed natural fruit juices instead.

Avoid weight gain at work. It?s common for jobs to involve very little or no physical activity. Instead of summoning a minion to deliver a document to a coworker, get some exercise and do it yourself. Not only will you feel better, but you will be able to maintain a healthier weight as well.

TIP! Find a weight loss buddy. Allying yourself with a family member or friend who also wants to lose weight gives you someone who can hold you accountable for your decisions and keep you company while you exercise.

Learn to decipher food labels. Fat-free does not mean healthy. It may contain a large amount of calories and sugar, both of which are things you should avoid. Makes sure you read the nutrition label to know exactly what is going in your body.

Try to eat a little slower so your stomach is able to catch up. Try chewing food longer, taking smaller bites and involving yourself in some dinner conversation as you enjoy your meal. This helps your stomach get full quicker, which in turn, you end up eating less and not stuffing yourself.

Give yourself rewards. If you?re following your diet, it?s fine to occasionally treat yourself to a single cookie or a bottle of your favorite beer. This does not indicate that you are no longer dieting. This just means you are sticking to your weight loss routine and meeting your goals. Bear in mind, it is possible to over-reward yourself. Be prudent. This diet is about a lifestyle, not punishing yourself.

It is important that you eliminate all negative phrases from your mind. You need to have a positive outlook if you want to be successful. Believe in yourself by repeating positive thoughts in your mind.

Once you?ve eaten your breakfast, try only drinking water throughout the day. Water is an excellent choice because you are not adding calories, fat, and sugar to your diet. You will be exercising and losing water so it has to be replenished. To shed weight successfully, you should drink only water following breakfast.

Try to refrain from working out all the time when trying to lose weight. If you don?t like to exercise, this is especially important. Instead, trick yourself by doing enjoyable activities like throwing a football, walking the dog or even going on nature walks. These will help burn off the weight and will not feel like work.

It can?t get much easier than that. Stay educated in order to maintain motivation. A sleeker and healthier body is great motivation. You may find out a good routine that works perfectly for you, keeping you from being overwhelmed.

Venus Williams leads US to victory over S. Africa

AFP - American tennis star Venus Williams gave her comeback hopes a boost with a win at the Hopman Cup in Perth on Sunday, and said she still believed she could be a force in the Grand Slams.

The former world number one beat Chanelle Scheepers in three sets to help the United States post a 2-1 win over South Africa in their Group B tie at the mixed teams tournament.

Williams, playing for the first time since October and just 24 hours after arriving in Australia, made a slow start against the 60th-ranked Scheepers but steadied to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The seven-time Grand Slam singles winner has climbed the rankings this year as she recovered from a major setback due to illness in 2011.

Williams has not won a Grand Slam singles title since her 2008 success at Wimbledon. She slipped to 134th in the rankings last year after suffering from Sjogren's Syndrome, a systemic autoimmune disease.

However, the 32-year-old has enjoyed much better fortunes this year.

She won her first singles title since 2010 in Luxembourg, teamed with sister Serena to win gold in the doubles at the London Olympics and finished the season ranked 24th in the world.

Speaking after hitting 44 winners in disposing of Scheepers, Williams said this year was a great platform for the coming 12 months.

"Last year was so awesome for me, winning a tournament and getting to the Olympics and getting a gold," she said. "I was extremely happy last year and moved up quite a few spots.

"This year is just about building on it and continuing to play deep into the draws and put myself in positions to play well deep into the tournaments."

Williams said she still believed she could be a force in the Grand Slams.

"I always feel that way," she said. "That's how you have to feel, you have to be positive.

"I try to be positive and tell myself I'm the best now. It doesn't happen every time but you've got to have that mind frame."

Kevin Anderson levelled the tie for South Africa with an upset win over fellow big man John Isner in the men's singles, the world number 37 beating the world number 14 after two tie-breaks, 7-6 (7/0), 7-6 (7/5).

The Americans then prevailed in straight sets in the deciding mixed doubles 6-3, 6-2.

In the evening Group A session Spain beat France 2-1, with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga recovering from a break down in the first set to beat Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 6-3 in the men's singles, before Anabel Medina Garrigues levelled the tie with an easy win over Mathilde Johansson, 6-3, 6-2.

The Spanish dominated the mixed doubles, winning 6-3, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Germany's Andrea Petkovic has withdrawn from the tournament after injuring her right knee during her singles match on Saturday, and will be replaced in the German team for the remainder of the tournament by Tatjana Malek.

The injury-plagued Petkovic, a former top 10 player, has ruptured the meniscus in her right knee and will miss the Australian Open, but hopes to only be sidelined for a month.

A Quick Reference List Of Homeschooling Tips | Norviel Blog

Those who have the guts for homeschooling also get the greatest rewards in the end. Their kids will become exceptional adults in time. It?s not a simple endeavor, of course, and help will have to be sought. This article is a great first step towards learning as much as possible.

If you are not good at a particular subject, it may be hard for you to teach it to your children in a way that will be useful. It would be a good idea to find another adult that is better at the topic and have them teach it to them.

Take advantage of the subjects that your kids enjoy. If you find one thing that each of them love, you should be able to take something from that subject and apply it to other subjects as well. If your kids are enjoying what you are doing with them while teaching them, it will be much more enjoyable for everyone involved.

If you home school your children, it is important that they still get play time. Just because they are getting schooled at home does not mean they need to be inside all of the time. Once they are done with their daily schooling and work, allow them to go outside and play for a little while.

Do not expect homeschooling to work seamlessly right from the start. It can take up to a year before you settle into a good flow with homeschooling. Even though you have educated yourself about the process before beginning, the skill to make it all work smoothly takes some time to develop. Exercise patience and you will be more successful.

Utilize local resources to find resources you need. You can find resources for homeschooling at garage sales, curriculum sales and even homeschool groups on sites like Yahoo and Craigslist. Don?t worry if they are gently used. A workbook with a few scribbled pages can still offer plenty of workable materials for class.

Get out of the house as often as you can. There is a great deal that can be learned from experiencing the world. This is actually one of the biggest perks of homeschooling. You are not limited to hours of working from a text book. You can instead bring your children to learn about the world first hand.

Explore several different learning programs before deciding on one. There are many on the market, and every one is unique. One might work a lot better for your child than another, but you will never know this if you do not look at several. Doing this will help you to maximize your child?s learning materials.

Attend some homeschooling conferences. There are more tools available to you than you may realize. Homeschooling conferences bring a lot of opportunities at your fingertips into one location so that you can maximize the time you have. You may find there are tools out there that can really help your efforts.

Enjoy the flexibility of homeschool. Don?t think you should follow strict schedules like traditional schools do. You can take as many field trips as you want, anytime you want. If you want to focus exclusively on math one day, you can. If you want to teach several subjects the next day, you can. As long as you are using effective strategies in helping your child learn, you can do whatever you want.

If your child is a visual learner, there are many helpful tools you can use to help them learn. Incorporate flash cards, workbooks, charts and matching games into your teaching. This will help them to learn best and retain more information. Homeschooling allows you to use different tools to help your child learn the best.

If something in your homeschooling strategy is not effective the first time, then allow yourself one more try at it. However, if it isn?t effective the second time, then you should just give it up and move on to something else. You should not waste precious time trying to get something to work when it clearly won?t. The goal is helping your child learn, so quickly move on to something else that will work.

Before starting your homeschool, make sure to check your state regulations and ordinances. Each state varies on what they require from homeschoolers, and you want to make sure that your homeschool experience and curriculum meet the basic requirements in your area. If you do not do this, it can cause problems for your children later in life and might even mean that the time they spent homeschooling does not legally count toward their education.

Set aside a time where schooling is done each day. One benefit to homeschooling is flexibility. If you are too flexible, though, you may not get everything in. Pick the days you want to school each day. Next, decide what times will work best for your schooling. Do your kids like to sleep in? School late, they won?t learn any less. By setting aside times you are more apt to get in all the lessons you need to get done.

To keep your student (and yourself) connected with the world outside the home-school classroom, volunteer. Volunteer work is rewarding and provides excellent real-world experience. Look for opportunities that closely match your student?s interests. You might also look for opportunities that closely correspond with current lessons. Students take pride in the ability to help others and will appreciate the chance to get out of the house.

With this article in hand, you should be able to reach for the stars. The great knowledge you now possess allows you to teach exceptionally and produce great results. As your kids go out on their own, you?ll feel the joy of giving them the best education possible in your home.

India gang rape victim dies in Singapore hospital

India gang rape victim dies in Singapore hospital
US-INDIA-RAPE:India gang rape victim dies in Singapore hospital

By Kevin Lim

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The Indian gang rape victim whose assault in New Delhi triggered nationwide protests died in hospital on Saturday of injuries suffered in the attack, a Singapore hospital treating her said.

The death of the 23-year-old medical student could spawn new protests and possibly fresh confrontations with the police, especially in the Indian capital, which has been the focus of the demonstrations.

"We are very sad to report that the patient passed away peacefully at 4:45 a.m. on Dec 29, 2012 (15:45 a.m. ET Friday). Her family and officials from the High Commission of India were by her side," Mount Elizabeth Hospital Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Loh said in a statement.

The woman, who was severely beaten, raped and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi, was flown to Singapore by the Indian government on Wednesday for specialist treatment.

Most rapes and other sex crimes in India go unreported and offenders are rarely punished, women's rights activists say. But the brutality of the assault on December 16 triggered public outrage and demands for better policing and harsher punishment for rapists.

The case has received blanket coverage on cable television news channels. The woman has not been identified but some Indian media have called her "Amanat", an Urdu word meaning "treasure".

Earlier on Friday, the hospital had reported that the young woman's condition had taken a turn for the worse. It said that her family had been informed and were by her side.

T.C.A. Raghavan, the Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, said after her death that the family has expressed a desire for her body to be flown back to India.

At a briefing earlier on Saturday, Raghavan declined to comment on reports in India accusing the government of sending her to Singapore to minimize the possible backlash in the event of her death.

Some Indian medical experts had questioned the decision to airlift the woman to Singapore, calling it a risky maneuver given the seriousness of her injuries. They had said she was already receiving the best possible care in India.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government has been battling criticism that it was tone-deaf to the outcry and heavy-handed in its response to the protests in the Indian capital.

"It is deeply saddening and just beyond words. The police and government definitely have to do something more," said Sharanya Ramachandran, an Indian national who is working as an engineer in Singapore.

"They should bring in very severe punishment for such cases. They should start recognizing that it is a big crime."

"SIGNIFICANT BRAIN INJURY"

The Singapore hospital said earlier that the woman had suffered "significant brain injury" and was surviving against the odds. She had already undergone three abdominal operations before being flown to Singapore.

Demonstrations over the lack of safety for women erupted across India after the attack, culminating last weekend in pitched battles between police and protesters in the heart of New Delhi.

New Delhi has been on edge since the weekend clashes. Hundreds of policemen have been deployed on the streets of the capital and streets leading to the main protest site, the India Gate war memorial, have been shut for long periods, causing commuter chaos in the city of 16 million.

Political commentators and sociologists say the rape has tapped into a deep well of frustration that many Indians feel over what they see as weak governance and poor leadership on social and economic issues.

Many protesters have complained that Singh's government has done little to curb the abuse of women in the country of 1.2 billion. A global poll by the Thomson Reuters Foundation in June found that India was the worst place to be a woman because of high rates of infanticide, child marriage and slavery.

New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in the country rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Denmark Township: An eye for birds, and a legacy in nature ...

Jim Fitzpatrick, pictured in 2005, is one of a handful of people who claim a sighting of the rare ivory-billed woodpecker. (Pioneer Press file)

Jim Fitzpatrick's two loves -- bird watching and the St. Croix River -- are clearly visible at his office at the Carpenter-St. Croix Valley Nature Center in Denmark Township.

The windows look out over the river. The bookshelves and walls are filled with birds -- stuffed, mounted, framed -- and photos of the late legendary bird bander Jane Olyphant.

It was Olyphant, a longtime family friend, who sparked Fitzpatrick's interest in bird banding as a young boy. Olyphant would often come to the Fitzpatrick house in North Oaks to band birds; she fastened tiny aluminum bracelets on 84,000 birds during her lifetime.

"We did mostly robins and blue jays and chickadees," Fitzpatrick said. "She got excited when she caught purple martins and tree swallows. Then one day, when she was taking the nets down, a woodcock flew into the net -- and I think she was in heaven."

Fitzpatrick, 64, who lives in Denmark Township and has served on the town board, is retiring Jan. 4. He has been the nature center's executive director since 1981, when he persuaded the Thomas & Edna Carpenter Foundation to transform a 300-acre private estate and apple orchard into a nature center.

"They wanted someone to be a part-time manager for an apple orchard and do programs on the side, and I said, 'Let's turn it around,' " said Fitzpatrick, who at the time was a naturalist at the Dodge Nature Center in West St. Paul. "I basically copied Dodge's program and brought it out here. We tweaked a few

things and went to the school districts, and they loved it."

Carpenter now boasts 725 acres on campuses in Minnesota and Wisconsin and serves more than 100 schools and 10,000 students annually, in addition to offering interpretive public programs and seasonal special events. Many of the programs have to do with bird banding; 195 species of birds have been spotted at Carpenter.

Birds are markers for environmental problems, Fitzpatrick says. "They're important because they are, literally, the canary in the coal mine," he said. "They are telling us that we are doing something wrong."

AN EYE FOR BIRDS

Fitzpatrick, a wildlife biologist, knows his birds. He is one of a handful of people who have reported seeing an ivory-billed woodpecker, a bird thought extinct until Fitzpatrick and others reported sightings in Arkansas in 2004. His younger brother, John, is director of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology in New York and has been the leading figure in the search for ivory-billed woodpeckers.

In March 2004, at his brother's invitation, Jim Fitzpatrick was a volunteer helping with the search effort in the White River and Cache River national wildlife refuges in Arkansas. An expert canoeist, Jim had traveled to Arkansas with two canoes to help ferry cameramen and other researchers to remote areas of the river bottoms.

One day, he dropped off a cameraman and struck off on his own for three hours, exploring a tributary of the White River. That's when he spotted the bird while reaching for his lunch.

"I had three cameras in my day pack and a sandwich in my hand," he said.

Although there have been no recent sightings and one of the nation's best-known birders, David Sibley, disputed the identification, Fitzpatrick said he knows what he saw.

"They can have their opinion, and I have mine," he said. "It's very, very hard to misidentify that bird."

Fitzpatrick said he was able to make a positive identification because of the bird's unique white patterns on its wings, its massive size and distinctive flight pattern.

"The white stood out. It was like a billboard," he said. "An ivory-bill (woodpecker) is 20 percent larger and 40 percent heavier than a pileated (woodpecker). With a body like that, the wings can't flap like a woodpecker does. They flap like a loon or a wood duck. There's no up and down. He doesn't have enough versatility to do that. He has to fly."

NATIONAL EXPERT

Fitzpatrick is considered a leading authority on wildlife rehabilitation and the use of captive wildlife in interpretive programming. Earlier this year, he was named Master Interpretive Manager for 2012 by the National Association for Interpretation.

"Jim's influence goes well beyond Carpenter and actually goes out to the whole natural resources and interpretive world," said Randy Thoreson, an outdoor recreation planner for the National Park Service. "He's known throughout the St. Croix River Valley, the Midwest, even nationally."

During his tenure at Carpenter, Fitzpatrick oversaw fundraising campaigns for a new visitors center, orchard building and pavilion. He also served on the town board and the boards of the St. Croix River Association, the Minnesota Conservation Corps, the Minnesota-Wisconsin Boundary Area Commission and the Minnesota Naturalist Association.

"He's been a dynamic and endearing leader who's connected people all across the community to nature," said Jennifer Vieth, Carpenter's director of development and interim executive director. "Anyone who has interacted with Jim has a huge soft spot for him. He makes people feel comfortable about asking questions about nature -- whether it's a group of young people or a group of senior banders. He's got incredible patience for teaching the different intricacies of bird identification and bird banding."

Although he's retiring, Fitzpatrick said he plans to continue to help Carpenter develop the 300 acres of riverfront land it owns in Troy Township, Wis.

He also plans to stay involved in St. Croix River issues. His family owns a place on the river just north of William O'Brien State Park, and he's been a self-proclaimed "river rat" since he was a toddler.

"I think the people who live here don't really grasp the meaning of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act," he said. "The St. Croix river is one of those unique treasures that the country holds. We need to do all we can to protect it."

How Can You Sue The President??NPP Are Full Of Blockheads ? Gen. Mosquito

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says he grossly erred in perceiving the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be astute legal luminaries as he now considers them as a bunch of ?blockheads" masquerading as ?bookworms?.

To him, assertions by the NPP that over 1.3 million votes were stolen for John Mahama in the recent Presidential elections are laughable and misleading.

The NPP legal team officially filed a petition at the Supreme Court on Friday to challenge the 2012 presidential election results which declared the incumbent, Mr Mahama as the winner.

The opposition party claims it has uncovered that over 1.3 million votes were illegally counted and stolen for the NDC's John Mahama.

In the petition filed at the Supreme Court on Friday, the NPP prayed that the Supreme Court declares:

(1) That John Dramani Mahama, the 2nd Respondent herein was not validly elected president of the Republic of Ghana.

(2) That Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the 1st Petitioner herein, rather was validly elected President of the Republic of Ghana.

(3) Consequential orders as to this court may seem meet.

But the NDC Chief Scribe expressed disappointment at the news Conference the NPP held after filing the case in court.

Urging NDC faithfuls not to entertain any fears that the court could overturn the electoral results since the NPP has no evidence at hand, he slammed the NPP for whetting everybody's appetite with allegations of a rigging machinery, only for them to talk about an imperfect electoral system which is prevalent in any democracy.

Speaking to PeaceFM News in an interview, General Mosquito as the NDC General Secretary is affectionately called, said it beats his imagination that a party that prides itself of having the best legal brains could file a suit against the President of the republic.

?If they have suffered defeat, they should just accept it and figure out ways of ensuring that they can contest in the 2016 general elections. Their recent actions is disintegrating the NPP?We in the NDC are just waiting for the president to be sworn in because various accounts testify that we won hands done and nobody should be scared?.

?Suing the president exposes their blockheadedness and I wonder if they have ever heard that in this country before. That are just blowing hot air and if that move is deliberate, then it means that they are trying to fool their supporters. There is no way you can sue the president.

?What they are doing is just like a coward who is trying to commit suicide and at the same time telling his family members that 'this is the spot where I am going to commit the act so come and rescue me'. If they are heading to the Supreme Court, then it was needless for them to have organized a press conference?, he said.

North Korea's caste system faces power of wealth

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? For more than a half-century, a mysterious caste system has shadowed the life of every North Korean. It can decide whether they will live in the gated compounds of the minuscule elite, or in mountain villages where farmers hack at rocky soil with handmade tools. It can help determine what hospital will take them if they fall sick, whether they go to college and, very often, whom they will marry.

It is called songbun. And officially, it does not exist at all.

The power of caste remains potent, exiles and scholars say, generations after it was permanently branded onto every family based on their supposed ideological purity. But today it is also quietly fraying, weakened by the growing importance of something that barely existed until recently in socialist North Korea: wealth.

Like almost all change in North Korea's deeply opaque society, where so much is hidden to outsiders, the shift is happening slowly and often silently. But in the contest for power within the closed world that Pyongyang has created, defectors, analysts and activists say money is now competing with the domination of political caste.

"There's one place where songbun doesn't matter, and that's in business," said a North Korean soldier-turned-businessman who fled to South Korea after a prison stint, and who now lives in a working-class apartment building on the fringes of Seoul. "Songbun means nothing to people who want to make money."

Songbun, a word that translates as "ingredient" but effectively means "background," first took shape in the 1950s and '60s. It was a time when North Korea's founder, Kim Il Sung, was forging one of the world's most repressive states and seeking ways to reward supporters and isolate potential enemies.

Historians say songbun was partially modeled on Soviet class divisions, and echoes a similar system that China abandoned in the 1980s amid the growth of the market economy there. In Korea, songbun turned a fiercely hierarchical society upside down, pushing peasants to the top of the caste ladder; aristocrats and landlords toward the bottom. The very top was reserved for those closest to Kim: his relatives and guerrillas who had fought with him against Korea's Japanese occupiers.

Very quickly, though, songbun became a professional hierarchy. The low caste became farmers and miners. The high caste filled the powerful bureaucracies. And children grew up and stepped into their parents' roles.

"If you were a peasant and you owned nothing, then all of a sudden you were at the top of the society," said Bob Collins, who wove together smuggled documents, interviews with former North Korean security officials and discussions with an array of ordinary North Koreans to write an exhaustive songbun study released this year by the Washington-based Committee for Human Rights in North Korea. While the songbun system theoretically allows for movement within the hierarchy, Collins said most families' standing today remains a reflection of their ancestors' position in the 1950s and '60s.

Generations after the system began, many of North Korea's most powerful people are officially identified as "peasants."

But starting in the mid-1990s and accelerating in recent years, songbun ? long the arbiter of North Korean life ? became one part of something far more complicated.

"Songbun cannot collapse. Because that would mean the collapse of the entire system," said Kim Hee Tae, head of the Seoul-based group Human Rights, which maintains a network of contacts in the North. "But people increasingly believe that money is more important than your background."

Despite its power, songbun is an almost-silent presence. Few people ever see their own songbun paperwork. Few low-caste families speak of it at all, exiles say, left mute by incomprehension and fear. It's only when young people stumble into glass ceilings, normally when applying to universities or for jobs, that they begin to understand the years of slights.

Eventually, most grow to understand and accept its power, but they rarely have more than a general idea of where they fit into the pecking order, experts said. In a country where secrecy is reflexive, the state simply denies it exists.

"This is all nonsense!" a North Korean government minder said, interrupting a visiting American journalist when he tried to ask a woman about her family's songbun. "People make up lies about my country!"

Certainly, few ordinary North Koreans understand the staggering and sometimes shifting complexities of songbun, which at its core divided the entire population into three main categories ? "core," ''wavering" and "hostile" classes ? and subdivided those into some four dozen subcategories.

North Koreans with songbun good enough for the top jobs will still likely get minimal salaries, but perks for the elite could include a good apartment in Pyongyang, regular electricity, access to quality medical clinics and easier admission to top schools for their children. In a culture where parents have immense influence over the choice of their children's spouses, high-songbun partners are prized.

But to be caught at the bottom, defectors say, is to be lost in a nightmare of bloodline and bureaucracy.

"My family was in the lowest of the lowest level," said a former North Korean coal miner who fled to South Korea in 2006, hoping to give his young sons opportunities outside the mines. "Someone from the state was always watching what we were saying, watching what we were doing ... The state treated us as if they were doing us a favor simply by allowing us to live."

The man, like other North Korean refugees interviewed for this story, spoke on condition he not be named, fearing that relatives still in the North would be punished.

When he was a boy he had hoped to be a doctor, or perhaps a government official. He was a top student, he says. But when colleges kept rejecting him, his father finally told him the truth: His father, it turned out, had been born in South Korea, served in its army and been taken prisoner during the Korean War. Like thousands of other southern POWs, he disappeared into the North's prison gulag, and then was forced into the coal mines.

With songbun like that, his choices were few. He would never become a government official. Getting into college, and perhaps eventually landing nonpolitical work, would have required impossibly large bribes. North Korea's growing network of small informal markets, a path out of desperate poverty for some, had yet to arrive in his village, deep in the countryside.

"I couldn't live my dreams because of my father," said the thin, ropy man, with the biceps of someone who spent 17 years swinging a pick deep underground.

But while North Korea is often portrayed as a Soviet throwback stranded in the 1950s, a reputation it earned with decades of isolation and single-family rule, strains of change do ripple beneath its Stalinist exterior. That has created a complex and uneasy relationship between songbun and wealth.

Most North Koreans have never met a foreigner, seen the Internet, or earned more than a couple hundred dollars a month ? but those in a growing economic elite now fly to Beijing and Singapore to shop. It's a country where human rights groups say well over 100,000 political prisoners are held in a series of isolated prison camps, but where an exclusive European firm, Kempinski, hopes to be running a hotel soon.

The market economy first took hold during the rule of Kim Jong Il, the son of the nation's founder, who ran the country from the 1990s until his death in late 2011, when his son then took control. In the mid-1990s, poor harvests and the end of Soviet assistance lead to widespread famine.

Official controls relaxed as hunger tore at the country.

Reluctantly, the government allowed the establishment of informal markets, with ordinary people setting up stalls to sell food, clothes or cheap consumer goods. Since then, the government has alternately allowed the markets to flourish and cracked down on them, leaving many people working in legally gray areas. At the same time, state-sanctioned trade has also blossomed, much of it mineral exports to China.

While many defectors and analysts say songbun remains a commanding presence in everyday life, a handful feel the growth of markets has reduced the caste system to little more than a bureaucratic shell. But to some extent, in a murky economy where nearly any major business deal requires under-the-table payments, most analysts believe it is the same songbun elite that profits in the business world. They are part of an informal club that gives them access to powerful contacts. If they need help finalizing a black market business deal, they have people to call.

"Who gets the bribes?" asked Collins, who believes the caste system remains deeply entrenched. "It's the guys at the upper levels of songbun."

This is also a time when songbun often has a price, even if no one bothers quoting it in North Korea's unstable currency, the won.

"It costs five to ten pheasants to get into a good university," said Kang Cheol Hwan, a prominent North Korean defector, using North Korean slang for 10,000-yen Japanese bills, which show two of the birds and are worth about $125 apiece. "The price goes up as the background goes down."

While amounts like that remain unimaginable for most in North Korea, where the per capita GDP is estimated at $1,800 per year, the small consumer class is growing ? and looking for ways to get ahead, no matter their songbun. While high-level government jobs remain restricted to those with excellent songbun, the low-caste also now have ways to get ahead. If they can afford it.

"Increasingly, there are ways to buy your way into jobs," said the former soldier and businessman, a short man with thick shoulders, huge hands and an expression frozen in a scowl.

Today, it's possible to make serious money in North Korea. There are Mercedes for the tiny population of truly rich, and Chinese-made sedans for the aspiring-to-be-rich. North Korean arrivistes can buy toddler-sized battery-powered cars for their children.

The ex-soldier lives in a tiny two-room apartment on the fifth floor of yet another Seoul high-rise, set amid a cluster of near-identical buildings, a concrete forest of middle-class anonymity. He doesn't want to talk about his songbun ? though it becomes clear it was closer to the bottom than the top ? but he says he eventually got a government job importing raw materials from China, then reselling them in North Korea.

"You can't get the jobs at the very top, but you can buy your way into the lower end of the top jobs," he said.

Before he was arrested and sent to prison for helping smuggle someone into China, he says he could make up to $5,000 a month ? a fortune for a man raised in a mining village in the rugged, poverty-savaged northeast.

But is this changing system, with the ever-increasing power of money, any fairer than one based purely on songbun? Certainly it is no gentler.

Getting rich in North Korea isn't easy, with the bribes, the thugs and the risk of getting handed over to the authorities.

The people who succeed are often like the former soldier, with his air of menace and his run-ins with the law. What he describes as the ideological brutality of his youth has given way to something else, a hard-to-define tangle where it's often impossible to separate songbun from corruption and the Darwinian brutality of the market economy.

More than five years after he moved to Seoul, in some ways he still lives with that brutality.

You can see it in the three locks he has on his front door. And you can hear it when you leave, and all three quickly click shut behind you.

'Clock is ticking': Debt talks underway

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The end game at hand, President Barack Obama and congressional leaders made a final stab at compromise Friday to prevent a toxic blend of middle-class tax increases and spending cuts from taking effect at the turn of the new year.

Success was far from guaranteed in an atmosphere of political mistrust ? even on a slimmed-down deal that postponed hard decisions about spending cuts into 2013, and pessimism vied with optimism in a Capitol where lawmakers grumbled about the likelihood of spending the new year holiday in the Capitol.

"The clock is ticking," Sen. Max Baucus, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said in remarks on the Senate floor as Obama and congressional leaders were meeting several blocks away at the White House. "My message to them is simple. We can do this. We can get this done, and we must," added the Montana Democrat.

Congressional Democrats said Obama was ready with a revised offer to present.

But that drew a denial from a person familiar with the talks, who said the president would review his proposal from a week ago, when he urged lawmakers to preserve tax cuts for most while letting rates rise above incomes of $250,000 a year. At the same time, Obama said lawmakers should extend unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. The person was unauthorized to discuss the private meeting publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The meeting lasted a little over an hour and neither the president nor the four lawmakers spoke with reporters before or immediately after the session.

The guest list included two Republicans, House Speaker John Boehner, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell; as well as Democrats Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, her party's leader in the House.

The same group last met more than a month ago and emerged expressing optimism they could strike a deal that avoided the fiscal cliff. At that point, Boehner had already said he was willing to let tax revenues rise as part of an agreement, and the president and his Democratic allies said they were ready to accept spending cuts.

Since then, though, talks between Obama and Boehner faltered, the speaker struggled to control his rebellious rank and file, and Reid and McConnell sparred almost daily in speeches on the Senate floor. Through it all, Wall Street has paid close attention, and in the moments before the meeting, stocks were trading lower for the fifth day in a row.

The core issue is the same as it has been for more than a year, Obama's demand for tax rates to rise on upper incomes while remaining at current levels for most Americans. He made the proposal central to his successful campaign for re-election, when he said incomes above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples should rise to 39.6 percent from the current 35 percent.

Boehner refused for weeks to accept any rate increases, and simultaneously accused Obama of skimping on the spending cuts he would support as part of a balanced deal to reduce deficits, remove the threat of spending cuts and prevent the across-the-board tax cuts.

Last week, the Ohio Republican pivoted and presented a Plan B measure that would have let rates rise on million-dollar earners. That was well above Obama's latest offer, which called for a $400,000 threshold, but more than the speaker's rank and file were willing to accept.

Facing defeat, Boehner scrapped plans for a vote, leaving the economy on track for the cliff that political leaders in both parties had said they could avoid. In the aftermath, Democrats said they doubted any compromise was possible until Boehner has been elected to a second term as speaker when the new Congress convenes on Jan. 3.

Apart from income tax rates, congressional officials in both parties said a handful of other issues were the subject of private talks in the Capitol. These included the Alternative Minimum Tax, which would effectively raise taxes on millions of upper-middle-class families unless Congress acts; as well as taxes on capital gains, dividends and estates.

In addition, benefits for the long-term unemployed are due to expire in the next few days, and doctors face the prospect of a deep cut in the fees they receive for treating Medicare patients unless legislation is passed to prevent it.

Further compounding the year-end maneuvering, there are warnings that the price of milk could virtually double beginning next year.

Congressional officials said that under current law, the federal government is obligated to maintain prices so that fluid milk sells for about $20 per hundredweight. If the law lapses, the Department of Agriculture would be required to maintain a price closer to $36 of $38 per hundredweight, they said. It is unclear when price increases might be felt by consumers.

Deal reached to avert East coast port strike ... for now

(Reuters) - The union representing nearly 15,000 dockworkers at U.S. Atlantic and Gulf Coast seaports stretching from Boston to Corpus Christi, Texas, reached a tentative contract deal with shipping companies on Friday, averting a strike that threatened to wreak havoc on the U.S. economy.

The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance clinched a deal in federally-mediated talks less than two days before a strike deadline set by the union to coincide with expiration of the contract on Sunday.

The threatened walkout would have brought container cargo operations to a halt at 15 ports along the Eastern seaboard and Gulf Coast, marking the first such work stoppage in 35 years. Friday's announcement came hours after the White House urged the parties to settle their dispute.

Under Friday's deal, the two sides agreed to extend the terms of their expiring labor pact for 30 more days while negotiators finalize details of their settlement, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service said in a statement.

The breakthrough came as the parties agreed "in principle" on the contentious issue of "container royalties," or bonus payments earned by ILA dockworkers based on the tonnage of cargo moved through their respective ports.

The new contract does not eliminate the royalty payments, as the shippers had demanded, according to Benny Holland, an executive vice president for the ILA.

"The royalty will stay intact. We have worked out a formula for it," he said in an interview. He did not elaborate and the shippers declined to comment. No further details were disclosed in the government's statement.

LONG-TERM AGREEMENT AWAITED

Established in 1960, the royalty payments to ILA workers are based on the tons of container cargo that move through a port. That tonnage has risen from 50 million tons in 1996 to 110 million tons last year, according to the alliance.

Total payments last year were $211 million, according to the USMX, or an average of $15,500 per worker.

The original idea of the royalty payments was to protect longshoremen from wage losses expected as a result of "containerization," in which more and more goods are packed in the now-familiar 20- and 40-foot long boxes. Those take less manpower to offload than the less-standardized containers they replaced.

The two sides also fought over the guaranteed eight-hour workday in the current contract as well as the seven-man "lashing gang." Lashing crews, or gangs, secure the cargo containers to the vessel using metal lashing rods to keep them from moving while the vessel is at sea. The maritime alliance wanted to eliminate each.

A new long-term agreement has an 80 percent chance of happening by January 28, Capital Alpha Partners analyst Loren Smith said in a research note.

The temporary agreement comes as labor forces felt emboldened by recent victories by other unions across the United States. At the same time, shipping companies and port operators have been using more automation, but have seen profits shrink.

The Baltic Dry index, which tracks the cost to ship materials overseas, is down 55 percent in the past year and currently trading at levels it has not seen in a decade.

Generally, most of the organizations running their business online will be looking for ways to improve their sales on the World Wide Web. If you are also looking for the same, you can opt for one of the effective and popular methods of marketing called as email marketing. The first step in this proess is to prepare a list of email IDs to which your marketing content need to be sent. This initially process might take some time since you will have to find the list of intended audiences to whom the message should be sent. This list can be prepared by attracting people to participate in a raffle prize or for subscribing to your newsletter, etc... All that they have to do is to provide their mail ID in the process of subscribing to your newsletter through your website. When this type of opportunity is given the list of mail IDs in your database will continue to grow on a daily basis.

Email marketing is a great way to reach prospective customers and above all this method is widely followed by business organizations due to its affordability. With the help of a single message a number of people can be reached and there are companies that can offer email marketing service to business organizations in such a way that they can effectively manage their advertising campaign.

These service providers will have software program in place so that the messages can be easily managed. Most of these firms will have attractive templates so that messages can be attractively created and they will also be offering the ability to track the success of the advertising efforts of their customers. You will have to simply enter your mail list and the software provided by them will return information with respect to the number of mails that were forwarded, the numbers that were sent to wrong addresses, etc...
Even though this method of advertising is effective, it can turn good results only when the messages are crafted in a good manner so that potential customers can be attracted towards your product or service as against the product or service that is already been used by them currently. It is better to ensure that the message created should be clear and concise since the recipient might not be in a position to read the long letter sent to them due to their busy schedule. These techniques of creating attractive letters are well known for companies offering email marketing service. So, it is better to get their help in this respect.

The Very Best Of RPS 2012: Gaming Made Me | Rock, Paper, Shotgun

By RPS on December 28th, 2012 at 2:00 pm.

As Space Year 2012 fades into the unreachable yesterday of history, we at RPS have developed preservation technologies that allow us to transmit past articles toward the future. So it is that we?re able to capture some of the highlights of the site from the last twelve months, and as with every year, among the highest of those heights are the Gaming Made Me entries. These reflections on games aren?t nostalgia, but rather personal accounts of defining moments, and that?s what makes them special. 2012?s are every bit as splendid as ever.

If you want to catch up on the complete history of Gaming Made Me (it can only be a matter of time before someone writes a Gaming Made Me Made Me), Alec compiled everything from last December backward here. It?s such an extraordinary collection. And now to add to that collection:

Gaming Made Jean Grae

The series first appeared in 2012 in September, when RPS was surprised and delighted to find itself referenced in the latest track by hip hop star Jean Grae. After tweeting our squee (squeeting?), Grae?s publicist got in touch with John to ask if we wanted to interview her. Sure, John thought, but how can that really be relevant to RPS? A Gaming Made Me! it was suggested. And so it was, as John chatted to the amiable dedicated gamer about what role gaming had played in her childhood, teenage years, entry into the hip hop scene, and what part it continues to play in her life.

Gaming Made Jonathan Coulton

Come November, Dan Gril snuck backstage after a gig by Jonathan Coulton, and spoke to the Still Alive singer about the games that had defined him, from Gun Fight to Tomb Raider, and his own programming days beginning on the Commodore.

Gaming Made Patricia Hernandez

Commissioning a Gaming Made Me from another journalist is always interesting. You don?t quite know what?s going to arrive in the inbox, and you?re not quite sure if they?re really going to get what makes the series so special. When Patricia?s arrived it was instantly forwarded around the Hivemind with exclamation marks. It?s an absolutely stunning piece, so beautifully written, capturing childhood experiences many won?t have experienced, making them feel completely relatable. Not just a Gaming Made Me highlight, but an overall highlight for RPS 2012.

Gaming Made Cara Ellison

And then it happened again. Cara?s interweaving tale of a teenage trip to the jungle, and a childhood spent with Lara Croft, is another of the best articles on RPS this year. Not only providing a fresh perspective on the narrow-waisted heroine, but also managing to make a walk for a wee seem like an Indiana Jones-style adventure, Gaming Made Me once more produces a laser-edged insight into a writer?s influences and personality.

And you?ll be pleased to learn that Nathan?s GMM is coming up before the holidays are through.
