ITunes changes

Apple plans an overhaul of iTunes that would mark one of the largest changes to the world's biggest music store since its 2003 premiere, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter.

Apple will unveil the changes by year's end, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren't public. The company will more closely integrate its iCloud file-storage service with iTunes so users can more seamlessly access and manage their music, videos and downloaded software apps across different Apple gadgets, the people said. Apple also plans new features for sharing music, the people said.

ITunes has been critical to Apple's success over the past nine years, generating revenue of almost $1.9 billion last quarter alone as well as tethering users to a widening family of Apple products.

A spokesman for the Cupertino company declined to comment.

Kindle games

Amazon.com will make it easier for developers to add social features to games for the Kindle Fire tablet, a person with knowledge of the matter said, working to narrow Apple's lead in the market for tablets.

The world's largest online retailer plans to release tools for digital-game makers by the end of July, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren't public. Developers will be able to add a broader range of features, including tracking high scores and monitoring awards won while playing games, the person said.

Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos is rushing to make Kindle games more alluring to help Amazon increase sales of the devices, which hold 17 percent of the $66.4 billion tablet market, compared with 55 percent for Apple's iPad.

Anthera drops

Anthera Pharmaceuticals Inc. declined the most since its March 2010 initial public offering Thursday after saying its experimental lupus drug didn't meet the goal of a clinical test.

Anthera fell 71 percent to 80 cents at the market's close Thursday, the biggest intraday drop since it first offered shares to the public.

The results of the mid-stage trial show the medication, known as blisibimod, acted differently on patients depending on the severity and type of their disease, the Hayward company said Wednesday.

Blisibimod, the company's leading experimental medicine, trails Benlysta from Human Genome Sciences Inc. and GlaxoSmithKline PLC, which was approved last year as the first new drug in 52 years for lupus, an autoimmune disease. The company said it will proceed with a Phase 3 trial.

The number of homes for sale in Santa Clara have been gradually increasing in the last few weeks.? Currently there are about 50 active homes for sale in Santa Clara.? Most of 2012 the level of homes for sale has been hovering between 30 and 40.? This could be due to the cyclical slow down of summer for buyers and sellers.? Already this year we have seen prices shoot up as much as 10% in a matter of a few months.

50 homes for sale is still a small number for Santa Clara real estate.? Considering that a majority of those homes are homes that have been sitting on the market for some time indicating that they are over priced and are not what the typical buyer is looking for.?

Predictions for the remainder of the year is a continuation of what we have been experiencing thus far.? Little inventory and multiple offers, will likely be the theme for 2012 Real Estate in Santa Clara.

April's home prices in Portland were up by 2 percent, according to the latest numbers from the Case Shiller Index.?

Portland prices were down .09 percent from a year ago.

Last month, Portland saw a?price drop of 2.8 percent, a new low for the city and perhaps a sign the market had "bottomed out."

Case Shiller is a monthly report on real estate markets around the country.?

None of the cities in the report showed new lows for April.

Prices rose around the country by 1.3 percent in the 10 and 20 composite city indexes, reversing seven consecutive months of declines, according to the report.

Though prices continue dropping, the April report is seen as positive news because numbers are dropping at a slower pace in April than March, the report said.

Ten of 20 markets showed positive annual returns. They were Boston, Charlotte, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Miami, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Tampa and Washington D.C. Only New York and Detroit fared worse in April.

With huge wildfires scorching the West, the US Forest Service chief says the aging and depleted fleet of air tankers is just one part of the firefighting mix. But he has secured extra aircraft for the season.

The air tanker fleet tasked with the most dangerous mega-fire tasks ? think dropping tons of fire-retardant into remote and steep canyons?? is under?particular scrutiny. Pointing to the fleet?s decade-long decline?from some 44 tankers in 2002 to nine at the start of the 2012 fire season, one critic is calling the current situation an ?air tanker crisis.?

However Tom Tidwell, chief of the US Forest Service, one of four federal agencies charged with tackling fires and the one responsible for deploying the air tankers anywhere in the country, maintains that the state of preparedness is good, because the air tankers are only part of the overall mix of fire-fighting resources.

Mr. Tidwell points to some 300 helicopters and small planes that are also used, noting that?in the past decade, the mix?has shifted, with more?emphasis on the smaller craft. As a former firefighter, Tidwell says, ?the personnel on the ground really appreciate the helicopters because they can go places the large planes cannot.?

Nonetheless, he notes that?over the weekend, the?service sealed a deal with the US military to?deliver four tankers when needed. In addition, the Forest Service has assembled?eight other plane contracts, including several with the?Canadian government to bring the available tankers for this season to 21. Beyond that,?he points to additional?resources that have just been announced ? a contract for seven total?next-generation air tankers, three?to be delivered?by the?end of this year.

But those numbers don?t tell the whole story ? and they are too little, too late, says former wildland firefighter Bill Gabbert, founder of WildfireToday.com, a fire news blog. He points to numerous fatal crashes, two this year, attributable?in part?to aircraft age and metal fatigue.

?Eight of the nine planes in the core fleet today date back to the Korean War?era,? he points out, adding,??We are in a crisis.?

Tidwell suggests there is too much emphasis on the role of the air tanker in fire suppression, adding, ?there is this perception that tankers put out fires. But they don?t. Firefighters put out fires.?

However, notes Mr. Gabbert, the large tankers play a critical role in the initial attack on fires. ?If we had more tankers, we could avoid the tens of millions of dollars spent when small fires don?t get put out and they turn into mega-fires,? he says.

A complex mix of changing weather patterns and human behavior means that the need for a more robust air-tanker response?is not a temporary or merely seasonal spike, says William Sommers,?a 30-year US Forest Service veteran who also served as its?director of Forest Fire and Atmospheric Sciences Research.

Tactical aircraft can be used to help protect particular resources at risk, he notes, adding?via e-mail, however, that ?the current fleet of aging aircraft is woefully?inadequate in the face of increased climate- and fuels-driven fire regimes being experienced in many places around the globe ? including the interior West of the US.?

The current severe fire situation is just another instance in a building trend driven by large-scale climate change,?fuel buildup? from years of fire suppressions, and drought, as well as increased home-building in previously wild areas, he notes.?

?The only question from year to year is what particular area is going to be hardest hit and when will that occur,? he adds.

Dominik Kulakowski, assistant professor of geography and biology at Clark University in?Worcester, Mass., says that while resources may be adequate for fighting fires during more moderate climatic conditions, ?they are insufficient for fighting fires during droughts that are as extreme as those we have been seeing in recent years.??

More tankers and other resources would certainly be helpful for fighting fires, but given the enormous area of forests in the Western US that could potentially burn, he says, ?we should be thinking not only about how to extinguish fires after they start, but also how to address the underlying climatic conditions that are making these mega-fires possible.?

Lamont Norman, wildfire risk expert at Pitney Bowes Software, points out that?this year is bringing the issue home because there is a significant additional wildfire risk caused by a large number of dead pine trees.?

With 18 full-time enforcers, a Michigan county is going door-to-door to find dogs that don't have a license, an effort that could raise more than $250,000 in fees this summer.

More than 1,700 dog owners in Genesee County bought licenses during a two-week amnesty when delinquent fees were waived. Now the campaign is getting serious with workers prepared to sell licenses on the spot or write tickets in the county 50 miles north of Detroit.

Tommie Johnson, a retiree who coordinates the dog census, tells The Flint Journal (http://bit.ly/MfgUWd) that many roads "have never been touched before."

He said people have told him, "'I've been living here 40 years and nobody ever bothered me."

College student Mandya Burnett wears a necklace of metal licenses as she does her job. Tickets can be dismissed if an owner later produces a rabies certificate and $40, four times the usual fee for a dog that has been spayed or neutered.

"People come to the door asking, 'Why are you coming to my house?' We're going all over Genesee County," Burnett said.

Workers travel in pairs and are told to write down addresses where a dog might live but no one answered. Johnson advises them to avoid conflict.

"In this day and age, people get up on the wrong side of the bed and are just looking for a confrontation," he said.

In a Flint neighborhood, Mark Walker, 51, showed a license for Rocky, his German Shepherd.

"You'll find in this area, 95 percent of dogs are licensed," he said. "It's your responsibility ... but some neighborhoods, people really can't afford it."

Golf Fore Life is hosted by Dennys Valley Autobody Inc. and DM Disposal Inc., and proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.

From the very beginning, it's difficult to properly find what to expect from Moonrise Kingdom. Is it about young love? Triumph through adversity? Is it just a showpiece for the artistic vision of Wes Anderson? Whatever the expectations, what's marvelous about Anderson's most recent film is that they're greatly exceeded. It's really all of the things mentioned above, put together in the most delicate and skillful manner to create quite possibly the best film of 2012 so far. The story occurs in 1965 on New Penzance Island, just off the coast of New England. Though the cast includes big names like Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton, the main protagonists here are the young Sam and Suzy, played by Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward respectively. They have been communicating via letters for over a year after a chance meeting in a church play one night. Slowly but surely, their correspondence leads to them growing ever closer, resulting in them wanting to meet again. The plan is to then go on their very own adventure out in the wilderness, all the while discovering bit by bit what love truly is. This is a deliberately simplified look at the plot, which is populated with many more clever characters and side-plots that tie everything together. Sam had to escape from camp, where he was part of a troupe of scouts, led by Scout Master Ward (Norton). This calls Captain Sharp of the police (Bruce Willis) to action, and a frantic search ensues. However, with that being said, the innocence of young love still lies at the movie's heart. Sam and Suzy are both unusual when compared to those around them, but when they're together they compliment each other rather than clash; when they talk to each other it's with genuine compassion and interest. It can almost be bizarre to see their intimate connection due to their young age (about 12 years of age), but the film is more a testament to the fact that love doesn't take age into the equation when it comes simply to the desire of being together. Love's manifestation here is a refreshing antithesis to the traditional representation in Hollywood, it reminds you of how simple love can be when the extraneous baggage of modern life is stripped away. This is ingeniously contrasted with the troubled connection between Suzy's parents (Murray and McDormand), which is falling apart at the seams. Their desire for adventure has been depleted, leaving just an empty shell of a relationship held together by their kids and home. It may sound hokey, but love is not only the central focus of the film but also what makes it so special. Few movies have ever spoken so directly and artfully to what makes love both special and hazardous. Needless to say, Gilman and Hayward's performances are extremely affecting, which is impressive considering these are their first roles in the movies. They at times seem a bit stilted but it eventually becomes apparent that that is part of their character. At the same time, their awkward mannerisms seem to melt away when they're together. It will be really interesting to see more from them in the future. The aforementioned supporting cast does an amazing job on their own, with many of them expanding their talents further than they've ever had to before. Bruce Willis is and has always been a great actor, but this reviewer never knew he could have a more mellow side that's in full display here. Bill Murray has already proven himself to be a great dramatic actor (as in Lost in Translation) and continues this image to perfection here, while retaining a slightly comic character as well. Frances McDormand and Edward Norton are both memorable as well, though their roles aren't given as much attention when all is said and done. Tilda Swinton is a noteworthy surprise, since after her masterclass performance last year in We Need To Talk About Kevin, she takes on a more light-hearted and funny role as Social Services. Just Social Services. These sorts of quirks are what make Moonrise Kingdom particularly admirable. It deals with often complex and almost depressing subjects, but looks at them with artistic vision and attention to the comical aspects (though these won't be mentioned here to avoid spoilers). The movie starts off with a camera going through the rooms of a quaint little home (where Suzy lives) with simple pans and rotations to portray the day-to-day life of a family in the 60s. Meanwhile, we hear a program on a music player talking about classical music, interspersed with orchestral pieces from a range of famous songwriters. It's an amazing way to start a film and it only gets better from there. The camera sometimes mimics older tendencies, such as awkward zooms towards the faces of our lead characters and a more foggy camera in between. The best thing about these creative decisions is that they don't impede the narrative. You don't stop and think: "Well, he's really showing off". It only improves the movie's uniqueness, and for fans of photography and visual arts, it makes for a whole new angle of enjoyment. The music is particularly entertaining, since it's a blend of music from the 40s to 60s (such as Hank Williams' Ramblin' Man) to orchestrated classical pieces, which accompany Alexandre Desplat's great soundtrack. It perfectly places you into the movie's time period, and is good enough to warrant listening to outside of the theater as well. It really is difficult to describe in words what makes Moonrise Kingdom really special. Understanding that takes the full visual/aural/narrative combination that you can only experience by watching the film. However, to put it in simpler terms, MK is about discovery and perseverance. The discovery of new things, the will to go into the unknown; the perseverance to hold on to what you love, not let go and lose sight of what was important to you in the first place. Though these aren't new emphases, the way Anderson and his coworkers approach it is so unforgettable, so colorful, careful and touching, that it really sits with you. If there's one film you shouldn't miss out on this year, it's Moonrise Kingdom.
