Gillmor Gang: The Teddy Bear Bubble

Gillmor Gang test patternThe Gillmor Gang ? John Borthwick, Danny Sullivan, John Taschek, and Steve Gillmor ? took the bait and played the Are We in a Bubble game. With Apple's stock price in free fall, the mobile giant reported another blowout What Me Worry quarter that sent the stock right back up. Meanwhile, Google announced, no, shipped Gdrive, and sent shivers down the collective cloud storage spine. What Gdrive really does is consolidate Google Office under an attractive layer of collaborative unification, borrowed first from Ray Ozzie's Mesh service and now emulated by a raft of smaller players bubbling up from Startupville. While we're all twisting slowly in the Apple wind, the real action is taking place in what the chat room somehow called the Teddy Bear Cloud. It's the new binky.

Predictably named iPavement puts hotspots into the sidewalk

Image

We know what it's like to be in a foreign country without a mobile internet connection. Although there are domestic options making it easier to connect our devices abroad, Spanish company iPavement wants to help confused tourists (and their confused devices) by seamlessly integrating hotspots into tiles -- which are seamlessly integrated into the ground. It's unclear whether users will have open access to the entire world wide web, or only controlled info about the city, but the service is at least free to use. The 24kg (53lb) tiles are slightly larger than normal, installed a maximum of 20 meters (66 feet) from one another and only work at temperatures between 10 - 45 degrees Celsius (14 - 113 degrees Fahrenheit). Touristy cloud apps like maps, coupons, and traffic updates in various languages are also a part of the deal, and you would look like less of a tourist without that huge guide to Madrid. Just lose the fanny pack and you'll be set.

HTC Titan II Review: Initial Impressions (Hands-On Photos)

IMG_0009The Titan II is yet another success for the hardware team over at HTC. It feels excellent in the hand, even if it's huge, has a nice balanced weight to it, and the little chin at the bottom gives it some extra pizazz when lined up against other designs on store shelves. It calls to me. But there are a few issues, as is the case with most any phone. The first, and most important one, is the screen size vs. resolution. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Microsoft, please push out Apollo so that your hardware partners aren't stuck slapping a 480x800 WP build onto a massive display.

William Levy: Cheating on Elizabeth Gutierrez With Grace Roubidoux?

Is Dancing With the Stars heart throb William Levy having an affair with waitress Grace Roubidoux, leaving girlfriend Elizabeth Gutierrez out in the cold?

Probably not, but the tabloids have apparently moved on from Jaleel White.

Levy’s girlfriend Gutierrez, with whom he has a child, is reportedly giving her ex another chance after cheating on her "at least 40 times," In Touch reports.

That same celebrity gossip magazine reports that he not-so-shockingly returned to his philandering ways recently with hostess/aspiring actress Roubidoux.

The 25-year-old denies any wrongdoing. Alleged sources aren't so sure.

“Grace and William hooked up last week,” a friend of the Kate Mantilini greeter, who often goes by the stage name Carolyn Hayver, tells the publication.

“He told her to keep quiet about it; he didn’t want Elizabeth to find out.”

Father Records Teacher, Aide Bullying Autistic Son

Feeling that New Jersey's tough anti-bullying laws weren't tough enough, one father took matters into his own hands, secretly recording a teacher and an aide mocking his autistic child and garnering national attention as a result.

Stuart Chaifetz said his 10-year-old son, Akian, had always been a "sweet and nonviolent child," and so it was puzzling when he began coming home with notes from Horace Mann Elementary School claiming he was having violent outbursts.

In some cases, Akian was accused of hitting his teacher and an aide. When meetings with school administrators didn't produce answers, Chaifetz was at a loss.

"I felt I was beginning to lose my son, that these outbursts were changing his very nature," he says. "I knew I had to find out what was happening in his class."

Chaifetz's method of getting to the bottom of things including wiring his son for sound one February morning. Akian returned with more than six hours of audio.

Six hours that Stuart Chaifetz said "changed his life forever."

Chaifetz detailed his findings on a web page, "No More Teachers/Bullies," and in a YouTube video titled: "Teacher/Bully: How My Son Was Humiliated and Tormented by His Teacher and Aide" (above). The results are certainly eyebrow-raising.

In clips of the audio, a classroom aide and teacher whom Chaifetz identifies as "Jodi" and "Kelly" can be heard discussing alcohol use, spousal issues and other personal topics, as well as mocking Akian and responding rudely to his questions.

Chaifetz in listening to the audio, the reasoning behind his son's outbursts became clear to him, and he then moved to take the case public.

Thanks to social media, the case has quickly gone viral.

In a note atop the hundreds of comments he's received, Chaifetz states that he's disabled the auto-post feature due to a large amount of "inappropriate posts," and that he's finding it hard to keep up with comments pouring in.

Chaifetz has also noted a groundswell of support on Facebook.

As a result of Chaifetz's impromptu sting, the aide was fired but the teacher was apparently reassigned to another school. On his web page, Chaifetz expresses the opinion that such teachers should be fired, "no second chances, no excuses."

He has collected more than 20,000 signatures on a petition seeking legislation that would result in immediate dismissal of teachers who engage in bullying.

OpenUDID Gets Back-Up From 17 Mobile Ad Companies In The Hunt For UDID Alternatives

openudid-supportOpenUDID, a new, open-source identification scheme that was created by marketing company Appsfire, says it has rounded up support from 17 mobile advertising companies (including itself) as developers look for alternatives to the UDID. Mobile app developers are scrambling for solutions as Apple phases out an older unique ID system called UDIDs that was criticized for compromising consumer privacy. A straightforward ID system is key for developers who want to understand who their users are and how to target them with advertising, so developers are looking for alternatives that Apple will tolerate. There are several contenders and many different methods, but it's still not clear which one the industry will settle on.
